- Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Write a college level essay with appropriate theme, language, grammar and structure
- Read college level material with understanding
- Edit and correct their own writing and the writing of others so that it is free of major grammar errors and excessive minor errors
- Summarize short articles and essays
- Conduct research and use APA standards of documentation
- Critique literature findings to determine their potential
- Apply the principles of research ethics to analysis of literature and practical issues
Learning Objectives
1. Write a college level essay with appropriate theme, language, grammer and structure
- Choose an appropriate topic and develop a thesis statement
- Learn techniques of brainstorming, clustering
- Create an introduction, body paragraphs with topic sentences
- Provide various kinds of support to reinforce ideas and argument
- Produce clear precise writing
- Demonstrate control of the rules of English grammar
- Understand the major rhetorical modes of writing and their organization, such as:
- Comparison/contrast; exemplification; cause and effect; persuasion and argumentation; process and classification
2. Read college level material with understanding
- Read short essays and articles, identifying the main and subordinate ideas
- Recognize rhetorical modes and pattern of development
- Use critical thinking skills in evaluating soundness of arguments
- Contribute to discussions and evaluate other’s points of view
3. Edit and Correct students’ own writing and the writing of others so that it is free of major grammar errors
- Recognize and correct the following faults in grammar and punctuation:
- Subjects and Verbs
- Sentence Fragments
- Run on Sentences and Comma Splices
- Faulty Pronoun Agreement between Subject and Verb (Predicate)
- Faulty Pronoun Agreement or References
- Shifts in Tense and Number
- Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers
- Faulty Parallel Structure
- Misspelling
- Missing or Incorrect Punctuation
4. Summarize short articles and essays
- Write a summary of a short article or essay of approximately 800 – 1000 words, reducing it to 1 / 3 of its original length
- Locate all the main ideas, and paraphrase them, without copying from the original article
- Use critical thinking skills to separate fact from opinion and identify author bias
- Write the summary in the third person, present tense, in clear concise English
- Conduct research and use APA standards of documentation
- Understand plagiarism and the need for citation of documentation
- Understand APA and MLA styles of documentation
- Choose a topic and conduct a short story research assignment, using a library and the internet
- Integrate quotations and paraphrase smoothly with own writing
- Provide in text citation and a Reference section, using APA documentation
