English As A Second Language (ESL)

Workshop Objective

The objective of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Workshop is to gain proficiency in both written and spoken English as it relates to the allied healthcare field. In this workshop, students will take an initial assessment to determine his/her starting level (Basic/Intermediate/Advanced).

Course Prerequisite

  • None  

Course Duration, Schedule & Cost (Per Level)

  • 4 consecutive Saturdays, 5 hours per day (20 hours in total) / level
  • $199.00 / level  

Course Content

Basic Level

  • Emphasis is on developing students’ ability to listen and understand. Fluency and communication begin to be emphasized. The instructor begins to assist students in correcting their own errors. Course content is relevant to students’ lives and focuses on topics chosen in accordance with students’ vocational goals. Samples are as follows: job skills, job titles, job safety, following instructions.  

Intermediate Level

  • Emphasis is on fluency and communication. The instructor teaches students the skills of self-monitoring in the context of situations which require the use of English for communication. Course content is relevant to students’ lives and focuses on topics chosen in accordance with students’ vocational goals. Samples are as follows: professionalism, preparation for job interviews, job search strategies, work schedules.  

Advanced Level

  • Emphasis is on fluency and communication. Students self-monitor in formal and informal situations which require communication. Although a few errors can be made in using the language, the errors generally do not inhibit communication. Course content is relevant to students’ lives and focuses on topics chosen in accordance with students’ vocational goals. Samples are as follows: resumes, job application letters, work ethics, customer relations, job promotion strategies.
