Roles and Responsibilities  

Medix Graduates of the Community Service Worker program have been successful securing employment in community agencies, schools, residential facilities and other organizations in the community service work field. Employment opportunities for those with Community Service Worker training are becoming more widespread, especially in the private sector. Some of the major responsibilities include interviewing and counselling clients, assisting individuals and families through support and advocacy, intervening in crisis situations, collaborating with other agencies to help clients in meeting emotional, health, and social needs, assisting social workers in various public activities, and reporting using case reports and statistical data. An effective Community service worker has good communication and interpersonal skills to cater all of the requirements of the field.    

Job Opportunities

Our Medix graduates secure employment in many areas of community and social service work. Our graduates are equipped to deal with a variety of situations under many job descriptions and titles. In other words "They wear many hats!"

Our graduates are employed in social and community services, government and mental health agencies, school boards, shelters, community centres, housing programs, adult and youth group homes, counselling and advocacy centres, immigration and settlement services, addiction treatment centres, domestic violence agencies, child and elder abuse services, correctional facilities, half-way houses, community living services ... the list continues to grow every year!

Medix graduates are finding employment as intake workers, residential counsellors, community support workers, developmental service workers, program staff, community and social service workers, community rehabilitation workers, community mental health workers, community support facilitators, advocates, day program counsellors, case managers, community outreach workers - the possibilities are really only limited by what you set as your goals!

Diploma Program  

The Community Service Worker program involves a great deal of small group work, practice interviews, and exercises in self-awareness. During the program, students will understand the complexities of contemporary community work practice, the helping process, human development, First aid/CPR and crisis prevention. Students will practice with families and individuals, understand the human health model, and explore research methods. Throughout the course of the Community Service Worker Program, students will gain the knowledge and experience to prepare them for work with clients from a range of age groups, with a variety of social and emotional issues.

Course Prerequisite

  • Gr.12 OSSD or Mature Student Status
  • Successful completion of entrance evaluation
  • Admissions Interview
  • English Proficiency
  • Criminal Reference Check (clear or have pardon prior to starting class)

Externship (Off-site placement)

As a mandatory component of our programs, all Medix students are required to complete an off-site externship placement. Placements occur at various locations throughout the community. This essential module allows students to exercise the skills learned in class, learn specific applications, and further enhance their learning experience in the selected facilities.

Financial Aid

All tuition costs include books, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification, and First aid/CPR Certification  

Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify. Students are encouraged to visit our Business Affairs department for any questions related to tuition and/or financial aid.
