Role and Responsibilities  

Dental Hygienists play a very important role in the healthcare industry by providing education and treatment in the prevention of oral diseases.  Some of their responsibilities are as follows  

  • The dental hygienist ensures the practice environment is safe for the client, self and coworkers.
  • The dental hygienist follows the Standards of Practice, Best Practice Guidelines and the Code of Ethics established by dental hygiene regulatory authorities and professional associations.
  • The dental hygienist applies comprehensive client care through consideration of general and systemic health and oral considerations.
  • The dental hygienist plans collaborative and evidence based dental hygiene interventions to meet client needs and goals.
  • The dental hygienist provides interceptive, therapeutic, supportive clinical therapy and ongoing evaluation of clinical therapy that contributes to the client’s oral and general health.
  • The dental hygienist maintains and understands the significance of clear and accurate documentation regarding dental hygiene care.
  • The dental hygienist practices professional, ethical behavior, communication, judgment, management, self-reflection, self-awareness and understands the importance of life-long learning.
  • The dental hygienist understands and takes into account any barriers for learning and considers ethics, dental hygiene process of care.
  • The dental hygienist understands and takes into account any barriers for learning and considers ethics, dental hygiene process of care and evidence based practice in decision making.
  • The dental hygienist incorporates the client in the planning process through collaboration and incorporation of client-centered oral health care goals.
  • The dental hygienist will be able to collaborate with the community in order to work towards health promotion.
  • The dental will be able to apply adequate health promotion strategies to individuals and communities within the dental hygiene scope of practice.
  • The dental hygienist will be able to apply scientific and evidence based information in order to educate clients and other health care professionals.

Diploma program  

The objective of the Dental Hygiene Diploma Program is to educate students to be proficient in both the theory and practical skills that are essential to being a competent Dental Hygiene Professional.  Students will learn theoretical and practical knowledge about the basic anatomy of the permanent and deciduous teeth; understanding and knowledge of the embryonic development of the face and oral cavity, the development of microscopic and macroscopic anatomy of the teeth and supporting structures. Students will learn fundamental reading and writing skills and effective communication, an introduction to the philosophy of preventive dentistry, basic physical and mechanical properties of dental materials used in the oral environment, a broad understanding of the health care system and current knowledge of nutrition. Externship (Off-site placement)

As a mandatory component of our programs, all Medix students are required to complete an off-site externship placement. The dental hygiene off-site placement is completed in our on-site dental clinic.   This essential module allows students to exercise the skills learned in class, learn specific applications and to further enhance their learning experience in our dental clinic facilities.
