What You Can Expect From The Developmental Service Worker Program

The objective of the Developmental Service Worker (DSW) Program is to enable students to serve those with developmental, learning and/or physical disabilities or mental disorders.

Students acquire the knowledge and skill base to effectively interview, assist, and counsel clients and their families.

The DSW program itself is condensed and intensive.

The program studies the areas of psychology, sociology, behavioural management, communication as well as pharmacology and teaching strategies for the developmentally challenged.

Developmental Service Worker Program Content Includes:

  • Counselling Techniques
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Concepts in Behavioural Management
  • Introduction to Developmental Disabilities
  • Teaching Strategies
  • Family Dynamics
  • Pharmacology

Upon completion of the theory portion of the developmental education program, students enter into a 600 hour placement in the work environment that allows them to gain practical experience in the profession.
