What will I learn as a Medical and General Lab Assistant?

The objective of the Medical and General Lab Training program is to train students to acquire skills and demonstrate competence in a variety of medical office procedures and laboratory techniques under the direct supervision of a physician, Medical Lab Technologist or other health care professionals.

The medical procedures and lab techniques include ECGs, vital signs, urinalysis, phlebotomy, specimen collection, solution preparation, and routine lab preparation of patient specimens.

Areas of expertise will include clinical chemistry, hematology, cytology, microbiology, and histology.

Front office skills include typing, word processing, patient data collection, insurance claims processing, bookkeeping, and reception.

Students are evaluated in all areas of professional and performance skills.

Upon satisfactory completion of the Medical and General Lab Assistant program, graduates are qualified to write a 3rd party examination and achieve their "certified lab assistant" designation through the Ontario Society Of Medical Technologists
