Medical and General Lab Assistant  

Role and Responsibilities  

The objective of the Medical & General Lab Assistant (MGLA) Program is to train students to acquire the necessary skills and demonstrate competence in a variety of medical procedures and laboratory techniques under the direct supervision of a Physician, Registered Medical Technologist or other health care professionals. Graduates of this program have successfully secured employment in doctor’s offices, medical labs, veterinary labs and a variety of other health care organizations. This diploma program is a perfect chance for those who aspire to enter the work force quickly.  

Upon successful completion of the MGLA diploma program, graduates are qualified to write a third party examination and achieve their “Certified Lab Assistant” designation through the Ontario Society of Medical Technologists. All examinations are at the option and expense of the graduate and Medix encourages students to become certified.

Diploma Program  

The medical procedures and lab techniques include ECGs, vital signs, urinalysis, phlebotomy, specimen collection, solution preparation, and routine lab preparation of patient specimens. Areas of expertise will include clinical chemistry, hematology, cytology, microbiology, and histology. Front office skills include typing, word processing, patient data collection, insurance claims processing, bookkeeping, and reception. Students are evaluated in all areas of professional and performance skills during the diploma program.

Externship (Off-site placement)

As a mandatory component of our diploma programs, all Medix students are required to complete an off-site externship placement. Placements occur at various locations throughout the communities surrounding our campuses.  This essential module allows students to exercise the skills learned in class, learn specific applications and to further enhance their learning experience in the health care setting.
